Hey all, This was my first hand routed raised (Relief) sign. I drew up a quick pattern idea in photoshop this morning and went to work. The wood is 3/4 whitewood from HD. I glued on the pattern and routed out the detail with a 1/8 straight bit, and routed the rest with a 1/4 round nose bit for a hand carved look. Painted black, sanded, raised portions painted orange and the raised border a nice stain to show the grain. All finished with a few coats of shellac. This is part of my halloween projects goal of a new halloween decoration every weekend in september. Last weeks project is still unfinished….tomorrow I will finish it and post. Thanks for looking!

Great job. The textured background sets the sign off nicely. Good design too.

Very cool idea and execution. I agree with Mike that the texture you did on the background really does the trick.

Thanks, I recently picked up a book about making wood signs from the 80’s at a used book store and it recommended using a round over bit to clear everything out and get the hand carved (textured look).

travislucia Kinda figured, Spielman was a prime author back in the 80s. I bought several of his books and Making Wood Signs was one of them. And through the info he taught back then I was able to make some good bucks making signs. I like to say that I’m an internationally known signmaker since I have sent some to Canada and one to Wales. Here’s one I made for the church where I have my Boy Scout Troop.
