My wife and I look at wood differently. I say stain and let the grain show through. She says paint and add some color! What say you? These are two Sue Mey designs (I gave credit to wrong designer last time…) Sorry.

For me stain is best, but I’ll be the first to admit there are times when paint works best.
On the examples you provided, I like the painted version best.

My first inclination is to go with stain, but you’ve proven me wrong on that with your painted version. Paint, IMHO, wins hands down.

Personally I like the painted version best, BUT, I am a colour person. I do also love the natural finish and I really believe that it all depends on what effect you are after.

They both have their place and like the others that have posted I like the painted one in this case.

I understand what you go through…my wife is a paint artist. But I really like the the bright look of these designs when they are painted. I am doing a couple like these but of sea life.

With paint it looks more like a painting. With stain it looks more like woodworking. Either works, but as a woodworker I prefer the stain and I think it is more subtle with the woodgrain showing though and not to color bright. I suggest you do both to keep your wife and yourself happy.

Paint makes it stand out but the stain is good to.
