Scrounged wood coffee table

My brother in law and his little girlfriend live in a very small north jersey apartment. Their coffee table as of now is a big Rubbermaid container. I decided this would go to them.

The top and long frame pieces are 1 by 4 by 4 ’s that Home Depot was selling for 50 cents each. I ripped them in half and put them butcher block style and made a light yet strong top. The sides were various scraps from the scrap bin and my neighbors recent shed build. The legs came from a series of pallets that had nice thick pine pieces in them.

The drawers are the only thing that isn’t scrounged. I made my first trip to a lumber dealer. Talk about an alcoholic going to the bar. I bought some very nice red oak and poplar which is what the drawers consist of (much cheaper than buying from the box stores). I also got 4 nice pieces (small) of walnut which I have never worked with before. Because I was honest and said it was my first trip to a hardwood dealer and talked with the gentlemen for a while he gave me one of the small walnut pieces for free. Future fun project.

Anyway dimensions. 45 inches (114 .5 cm) long. 19 1/2 (49.5) wide. 17 inches (43.5) tall. I tend to use metric more now.

Finish is min wax red mahogany stain and poly for the top and drawer fronts. Zinssers amber shellac for the frame. Min wax paste wax over the whole thing.

Thanks a billion for looking.

Nice coffee table, Kaleb. I’m sure they’ll make use of the coffee table’s storage. The center dovetails on the drawers look like little bowties. Nice finish too.

Cool coffee table with clever storage. I like it and I’m sure the recipients will really enjoy it.

Thanks kdc. That’s why I made the drawers so big because they need the storage. Thanks for looking

Very innovative design with the exposed dovetail drawers. The stain and amber shellac worked really well.

Looks really good. The centerpiece of your living room is the coffee table.Tables that allow you to store things are one of the best ideas that man has come up with.A great storage table can be made of all kinds of different materials.

I love this piece, and the fact that you’ve used recycle wood makes it even more special. Great work.
