Well it looks like I made it with a couple days to spare. I wasn’t sure I would, but the Mrs let me bring the mantel/entertainment center I’m making for my brother in the house for final finishing, so the shop was available for completing this.
This serving table started out life as a gate between our yard and the neighbors’. Over the years it became less and less attractive until it eventually fell down and just layed there. Being old and no longer serving any useful purpose, it was declared “Junk” (I’m waiting for the Certificate of Declaration to arrive in the mail). And, with the Summer Challenge asking us to use One Man’s Junk I thought this the most appropriate material available.
I made a new gate at the request of the Mrs (partially visible in the background) and took this piece of junk into the shop. After pulling it apart and cleaning it up a bit, I got some wood that I thought might be useful. In keeping with the other side of the challenge I planned to make something that could be used for serving purposes at the next family barbeque. While that’s my intent, the Mrs has already informed me that there will be plants on the table.
So here is One Man’s Junk Serving It Up With Class. The table is about 23 inches tall, 19 inches wide and 30 inches long. I have no idea what kind of wood it is, but it’s pretty light and works like cedar. It finished with a few coats of Teak Oil.

Great job there Russel. I like what you have done where the legs join into the top.
Gotta like those 2 for 1 projects.
Oh . . . what kind of wood it it?

Thanks.
Zuki, the two for one seemed natural since the gate was an outdoor object it seemed best to leave it there. And I guessing the wood is some sort of cedar.

Great build Russel. From the looks of the first picture, there might be another project or two for the Mrs. Thank you for sharing.

A briliant piece of woodworking from the junk. The finish is too good to believe that it is from old junk. They say beauty is skin deep, here uglyness of the junk is skin deep. Never throw old wood unless u see what is beneth a thin layer.

Correction: Apparently I should read the rules before entering. The ‘Serving It Up With Class’ category says it should use at least two types of wood. Well, this doesn’t so I guess I only hit one bird with this stone so I’ve removed it and it only qualifies as One Man’s Junk. Sorry for misleading anyone.

A great looking table Russel!
The wood looks to me like cypress.

That’s a great recycling achievement Russel and a really nice project. Lovely colour on that table.

Dick, if you say cypress, I’ll believe you. I thought that cypress was more yellow in color, but if I knew anything I could get a real job.
Stewart, the color is what came out when I applied the Teak Oil. There’s a lot more red in there than I expected. I kinda like it as well.
