Well someone had to do it and with Halloween just around the corner it might as well me be me grin my wheels started turning what could I make that would set in this holiday and then it hit me like a ton of bricks A Coffin So then I knew what I wanted to make just didn’t know how to go about it but after thought and looking around the shop I spotted an alder glue up that I had on the floor in the corner set aside that was for another project and it came to me a bandsaw box wrapped with mitered jointed spalted hackberry, since I wouldn’t be able to spline such narrow corners, I used the alder glue up for the bandsaw box, the walls would hold the mitered joints rigid and coincidentally the spalted hackberry used, I had actually cut it out of a cemetery via chainsaw and some of the trees had grew up through graves. The wooden hinges are Wenge pinned with spalted hackberry dowels that I made, this box measures 13” x 7” x 5 1/2” the plug that I cut out, I made another coffin with a lift off lid, they are both finished in tung oil, wipe on poly and paste wax except I tried something new on the smaller coffin, I did a first coat of tung oil then after drying I did a coat of non wax shellac so as to assist with the end grain soak up and it worked great! I then followed up with several coats of wipe on poly, thanks to Charles Neil with his help on one of my postings earlier in the week. The smaller box measures 11” x 5” x 4”

I’m thinking on keeping the hinged coffin for myself but if someone is willing to pay my asking price it’s theirs, it ain’t going to be cheap, :) I’ll be taking them both with me to my show this coming Sat.

I embedded the smaller coffin below.

Thanks for looking and comments are always enjoyed reading and replying too.

Extra fine craftsmanship! Such wonderful joinery for beveled corner work. I’d sure be happy with almost that quality. I also really like the finish.

Maybe you can make caskets for people who want to bury their pets instead of cremating them? I made a casket for our first cat that died.

Another thought is Dracula dolls?

Thanks Monte, Jim, Russell.

Tom, I sure hope it’s not construed as a pet burial box, as that wasn’t my intention LOL

Looking’ good, and good luck on your show this Saturday. My bet is someone will take that hinged one off your hands.

Those are very cool.
Pet burial boxes are all the rage and some are quite pricy according to my veterinarian daughter.

Not misconstruing, just thinking it might be another ave to explore if you’re interested. You could offer the service through veterinarians?

Just find some Dracula dolls. LOL!
