Story pole measuring stick

This is a story pole measuring stick. The pictures are hard to see but it is basically 2 pieces of 1 1/2” x 3/4” material put together with a slide type of configuration so the can slide by each other. The back piece is dadoed out in order to inset the tape from an old tape measure.

I use this quite often and for many things. I originally designed it when I was doing many basement remodels or frame ups. With most of them, each stud had to me measured to fit because of inconsistency of all things in place. I was getting tired of running up and down a latter measuring each one or trying to hold my tape measure just right.

So the way I designed this, the front part is the stationary part that sits on the floor and the back part with the tape measure slides up. I made my front part at eye level and cut a 45% angle at the top of it making that my measuring point. The the back was the same length. The measurement distance on it is between 5’ 5” and a little over 10’ and it is right on every time. They can be made to be longer but this is all I needed on this one.

If there is enough interest I will try to make a drawing because the pictures are hard to see.

Looks good!
My story sticks are usually just a piece of scrap long enough to do the job with a pencil mark where needed.

This is a great tool to have in your shop. You can use the same idea in smaller form to accurately measure inside dimensions as well like insides of cabinets or drawers.

The more I think about it, the more I like this Mark55. No bending over or standing on tiptoe/ladder, no adjusting (head angle) bifocals to read… Yeah. I like this a lot! Thanks for sharing!

Dallas, Thanks, but like you say a story stick usually has permanent marks on it so maybe I should call it something else.

Luv2learn, Never thought of making smaller ones sounds like a good idea.

CFrye, You are so right, it makes things so much easier. I even use it for trim, on long vertical pieces.
