Here are a few examples of some boxes I’ve done in the past. Several of local apple wood I harvested and air-dried, one of sycamore, and a lap desk of maple veneered MDF surrounded by mahogany. All were given away as gifts. Boxes lend an endless variety of design opportunities, and I like doing them. Right now I’m slicing up orchard cherry to air dry for a year and save. The orchard wood, all pruned into convoluted shapes as it is, has a high rate of degrade, but is beautiful wood. I mainly concentrate on saving the straight trunks, if I can get them.

Your boxes do a good job of showing off the beauty of the wood.

What did you use for felt on the third box? Did you blow the felt on some paint or did it come from a sheet? The look really nice.

Thanks everyone. That isn’t felt on the lap desk, it is red satin stretched over cardboard and glued to the MDF surface. I’d have preferred leather, but couldn’t find it locally and was too cheap to order it from far away back then. The fabric has held up well.

Nice
and some thinking in the satin.
I would not have thought of that.
Of course that’s why I have a wife, to do that thinking for me.
