Chess table

I made a custom chess table with two drawers for some close friends of mine. I made the table and border out of cherry. It was piece of 10qtr cherry that I found at a local lumber yard. The chess table itself is made of hard maple and walnut. I created little sections in the drawers for their chess pieces and lined it with green felt. I used loose mortise joinery on the table base and hand cut my dovetails for the drawers.

They wanted a very basic stain with a satin finish. The table came out so flat and so smooth. As an added gift. I am making a video from start to finish on how I made the entire piece. (shortened to about 7 minutes long). I can’t wait to give it to them.

Thanks for looking!

Very nice! My wife told me just the other day that I need to make a chess board. This is just the inspiration I needed.

great job Fred. For sure your friends will love it. I particulary like the broad frame for the board, to sit the out of game chessmen , eventually a clock, or a couple of glasses. Well, you can even can have a light lunch there.

Nice . Look forward to seeing hte video.

Really nice, so simple and elegant. I just finished a drop leaf table restoration to put my hand made chess set on, but some day I want to make a table from scratch, with piece storage. I have a huge folder of ideas for it and I am definitely adding yours to the inspiration file!

Thanks so much for the kinds words guys! I really appreciate it.
I made two videos. One is longer than the other. I figured I would post the shorter one as I’m not really sure how, where, or what sort of implications would apply with download speed, etc on this site. Anyone have any input for a technology novice?
