Project Information
CAT TREE
This is a 'cat tree' for my daughter who recently adopted two kittens - brothers, and both black as soot. I figured the cats needed a a safe place to retreat away from herJack Russell Terrier dog, and her 14-month-old little terrier terror of a son. The only problem is I fully expect the baby will be trying to climb the tree with the cats.
The structure are crooks from local 'black gums' cut about a year ago with another project in mind, so it is well seasoned by now after drying in my garage. Some sections were resawn on the bandsaw, which yielded some nice curved stock suitable for this project. The platforms are pine slats over cradle shaped ends, and all is bolted/screwed together quite robustly - with the baby in mind of course. Hard to see in the photos, but there are intermediate 'steps' fastened to the main trunk for the cats to negotiate in climbing to the next higher or lower platform.
The cat tree stands a little over five feet tall and has a footprint within a 30" circle, and is meant to stand in a corner, possibly secured with wire at the top so it can not topple over.
It was a fun project, which like most one-offs, took longer than I expected.
