I was approached a month ago about building a wine rack for an auction to raise money for cystic fibrosis research. Without hesitation I happily accepted the challenge. The nature of my business is to use reclaimed materials so, naturally, a reclaimed wine barrel was the first thing to come to mind. Once I aquired the barrel, design was the next challenge. I wanted to build something that was original. So, this is what I came up with. Doesn’t look challenging but it certainly was. Every single piece of oak is curved in every plane! Extremely challenging when building the base! Any how, this is what I came up with. Bidding was up to $450 when my wife left the event. Very excited that I could help the cause!

That’s a really cool idea and very well executed. Doesn’t hurt that it’s for a good cause as well.

Thats a fantastic design! Reclaimed materials are great to use. The base is from the same oak barrel? Did you use a stain?

Wonderful way to give back!

Thanks for the compliments. The entire rack was built from a single barrel and nothing else. I used light walnut danish oil for the finish. Clear danish oil on the wine stained areas. Found out that the final price ended up at $650! Very excited about that!

That’s a unique and beautiful wine rack! It looks like an art sculpture. Cool and creative use of the wine barrels. Excellent work and for a great cause to boot.
