I got the Ron Herman Challenge DVD 3 years ago. After hooking up with Paul Sellers I decided to finally try it. I keep the “challenges” right across from my bench. Pic #2 is some practicing I did in between frames #1 & #2. The first frame I did was a total failure. #2 was better but I badly messed up the half lap dovetail and it ended up a plain half lap. Pic #3 is my second attempt and I missed the last 3 joints. Pic #4 is the challenge answered. All joinery was done by hand. There are 9 joints total in this frame. Joint #1 bare face miter #2 end half lap #3 bridle joint #4 mitered bridle joint #5 half lap dovetail #6 mortise & tenon #7 slot bridle joint #8 crossing half lap and #9 through mortise and tenon. I’m not sure is I got the order correct but I remember that the last 3 joints have to fit perfectly or you have a pile of kindling. If you like doing handwork give the challenge a try.

Wow, that’s pretty cool. Sounds like some good learning in taking on this challenge. The only completely hand cut joints I’ve ever made are half lap and mitered half lap, and with a crappy saw at that. This would definitely be a challenge.

It’s worth it if you like the challenge aspect. It took me 4 tries before I finished it. I also practiced making a lot of the joints in between making the frames.
