An acorn box

I made this little oak box as a gift, and to hold another gift, for a Golden Wedding Anniversary and I was unhappy with the resulting proportions. The front looked too deep and plain, even with the two nice knots, so after much deliberation I added a bit of interest in the form of the intarsia oak leaves and acorns. Mrs YS and I are quite pleased with the result.

Inset into the lid are two coins, from 1958 and 2008. We couldn’t run to gold sovereigns!

wood handmade

The box measures around 7” x 6” x 6”.

I love it – how thoughtful are placing the coins in the top! The acorn and leaves look great too! I enjoy boxes for sure… Nice work!

Wow!

With a box that nice, I can not imagine how nice the gift, it contained, must have been!

Very well done. The intarsia adds just enough embellishment without becoming a distraction. And the coins are a cool idea.

Never mind what you think, as long as Mrs. YS is happy!

I agree that the leaves and acorns are just what this box needed to make it perfect. Wonderful combination of woodworking and creativity, as always!

By the way, as you might guess by my LJ handle, I have a special fondness for 1958. :-)

Firstly, I must say I love the way that the names of the first three commenters “Jimboe, Freddo and Lew” hang together. Reminds me of an Old Tyme Music Hall act; probably jugglers! Thanks ,one and all, for your comments.

Charlie – Mrs YS is dying to know the relevance of 1958. Do you have a special birthday this year?

Alas, Stewart, I will reach the half-century mark this year. If I had known I was going to live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself. :-)

Very nice Master Stewart. The applique looks fantastic. I have some white oak that looks very much like that. I believe you have given me a bit of inspiration.

Congrats on your milestone (kilometerstone?),

Lovely box, Stewart. What, pray tell, is the lining made of?
Excellent way to commerate fifty years of marriage.
I would expect the couple to do the exchange of gold items, but this box is golden even sans sovereigns.

Thanks one and all. The box will be winging its way to Ontario this week.
Apologies to Douglas for missing his question until just now. The box is lined with crushed velvet taken from a blouse of my wife’s. (She did give me the blouse!). I often buy crushed velvet garments from charity shops / thrift stores(?) for this purpose.
