I recently completed a custom entertainment center. I built this cabinet with a few tools in a two car garage that is being used to house two cars. For power tools I have a table saw, router, random orbital sander and a belt sander. I have also constructed some shop jigs for those tools using the self same tools.
I have posted this project to encourage others with limited tools and shops to try and take on larger and more complex projects. Indeed for me the most difficult and time consuming portion of the entire project was the staining and varnishing.
The drawer boxes are made of 1/2” Baltic birch plywood. The cabinet carcasses are made of 1/2” and 3/4” red oak plywood. Drawer fronts and some other pieces are made of solid red oak. I stained the oak with Minwax English Chestnut oil based stain, and varnished with Minwax brush on poly. I have included some photos of the construction and finishing. The counter top is a granite remnant that we were able to get at a good price.
