I picked up a harbor freight mortiser at an estate auction. Asked my wife for and x/y vice and thought I would be set. Well she got me a bloody huge vice that does not work even if the mortiser is elevated. SO I played around with it for a couple of nights and figured out if I placed the vice to the left I could use the lever more easily. the problem then was no support directly under the work Piece. So I built up a block with floor glide levelers and built a table with a fence. Right now I am clamping the work down and using the vice to move the wood. If it works out well I will rebuild the table with t track for dedicated hold downs.

I think its a fairly standard size vice.
I know the one I have is almost the same, they are a bulky piece of kit I mounted mine on a timber ply base and also found the lever was obstructed.
I only use mine on the bench drill.
