Walnut Pencil Box or You Know Your Bored When...

While waiting for a replacement drive belt to come in for my planer, I have been catching up on some piddle projects I been putting off around the shop. I have stained shop cabinets and tool stands, rearranged equipment, started gluing up cedar panels and even actually cleaned up some. To put it blountly I have been a tad bit bored. My son is leaving for Tennessee Tech next week and while looking over a list of items recommended for his dorm, I saw they suggested a pencil/pen holder for his desk. I started thinking…hey I can make one of those. Ahhh now I had something to do while the glue dries in the cedar panels. I looked around the shop and noticed a couple of very thin black walnut slabs (just slightly thicker than 1/4”) and decided those would work nicely. Threw together a 4” x 4” box. I went to the 2nd most unused tool in my shop, the scroll-saw (with the mortis cutter being #1) to cut out the top and the letters for the front. Finished with BLO. While working on this I suddenly remembered something I had sort of forgotten….woodworking is a fun hobby. Every once in a while its good to do a project just for the pure joy of it.

Pretty cool stuff Mr. Yea some times we get so caught up in every day life or those projects your trying to finish up for that pay day & we loose thought on why we do wood work. Some times it’s nice to do a project just for the joy of it. Great build sir.

Nice. When your son is sitting at his desk (doing HOMEWORK of course) he’ll see the box and remember Dad!

LOL….Thanks Joe. Need to cut out a wooden boot and glue it on the other side. Just a subtle reminder of it is his homework he needs to be working on…lol

Nice pencil box, dude. I think the boot idea is fantastic! Did you mention cedar? A canoe project will cure boredom for a good long time. Keep that young fella cracking the books, and thanks for posting.

Jeff- Thanks bud…. pretty sure most folks would expect a canoe to float so thats probably out…lol Trying to sneak around and build a cedar chest for my wife as a Christmas present. She almost never goes down to “da cave” but being well versed in ole man Murphys Law….I am doing it in small increments to make it harder for her to identify.

Jim- thank you sir. TTU is a part of the Ohio Valley conferance so there is a wee chance they play a team or two from up your way. The walnut would be really nice is it was about 3/4 of an inch thicker…lol

Some of the best projects are the ones that are the easiest to do. Nice job on the box.

Enjoy it while you can Marty….At that age ole DAD is still number one. The son cried that first day where the daughter walked in like she ran the place and looked at us with that “what are you still doing here” look on her face. I am wondering if Caleb will cry thursday??? lol I sure hope not, I am hoping to rent his room out to help cover expenses…
On the crimson and white front…ole Butch is gonna turn things around up here… might soon be safe to wear orange and white again soon…lol

Dave- Thanks buddy. I cant remember the last project I did without some sort of plan already in my mind. this was a toss it together as you go sorta deal…was great. Stay safe
