I got this from American Woodworker magazine issue #77 from December of 1999. You can get it from google books/magazines. Frank Klausz made his from cherry, I used pine. He used sliding dovetails for the back of the step and the stretcher. I used a dado and wedged through tenons. I made this from a couple of pine boards – a 1×8x6’ and a 1×12x6’. I finished it with 5 coats of shellac with 3 coats of poly on the step. I made it for my wife but she doesn’t like it. Maybe I should I used cherry like Frank.

Love that! It’s tragic and funny at the same time.

It is very nice work, and a nice stepstool tool. Well executed through-tenons particularly.

Every female that has seen this, hasn’t liked it (included my daughters). Every male that has seen it liked it. Go figure.

It’s a “Y” chromosome thing! I like it. Nice work.

Tell your wife that it is made in the Shaker style, and then explain to her that it is strictly utilitarian, and not meant to be eye candy.
The Pine makes it nice and light to move it around when needed.

It looks good and useful and safer to use as well than the usual step stool. Maybe she’ll change her mind.

Have your say...
