35 mm LEATHER HINGES

Here is a little test sample that kind of shows how I made the leather hinges for the MODERN ASIAN STYLE BOX .
The board represents the back of a box .
I drilled two 35 mm holes with a bit that I use for cabinet doors to a depth of the thickness of the leather and a wooden plug about 2mm.
I cut two pieces of leather, in this case I am using one of my old belts and cut two 3mmx35mm plugs from a scrap piece of wood (thick veneer )
Next I cut the board with a thin kerf blade centred on the drill holes .
I have to make a jig and bit to eliminate the pilot point hole which still shows .
Next I cut the wood plugs in half and sand straight edges flush.
Using Crazy Glue or epoxy glue for leather I glue the leather and wood plugs in place and apply clamping pressure as per recommendation on the glue container .
When glue has set I sand the plugs flush with the board and use a file to bevel the edges to provide clearance for opening . A idea in progress and some refinement are necessary but the first set on the MODERN ASIAN STYLE BOX worked out OK.
I made a initial test sample and opened and closed it about a thousand times to see if the leather would last and it seems to be OK using a old leather belt which is well worn .

I like the idea of combining materials like wood and leather. Nice idea.
