A couple of years ago my son asked me to make a stave snaredrum. The first i made was from wenge. I made it without a lathe. After making this one I was not satisfied about it, But also after making the first one i like to make them. After buying a lathe the second one was made out of hard maple with mansonia (It looks like walnut. Local names are: “bété, aprono, ofun, koul”. As far as I know there is no englisch word for this wood. If there is please let me know) ) . This second one has also wooden hoops. This wooden hoop is made out of 72 peaces. This second one has also WOODEN lugs! (On one of the pictures there is a close up from the lug) The third snare drum was made out of hard maple with black hardware.

Thanks for reading and /or watching

Very beautiful looking snare drums, the wife is a drummer and when I became interested in building a drum,
i was informed that the angles that the drum heads set on must be very precise, how did you make yours,
on a very large lathe, or did you use the outboard side of the head? Thank you for sharing, and since you
continue to make them, they must sound pretty good.

Hello Bluepine 8,

The edges where made with a router bit with a bearing. The drums look good but i.m NOT satisfied about the sound. Next time I have to work on the edges. Now the snare has to much resonation.

Beautiful work! I am very impressed with the wood hoops, I also hope to make some for my snares. Any tips or tricks to getting them right?

-- Dang! I cut it twice, and it's STILL too short!
