I built a diy smoother plane using the Popular Mechanics plans and an Iron I picked up at the swap meet. All in all it was an interesting and fun project. The thought of making my own plane is very appealing. I realize the iron is just a tad long, but I don’t think the wood will know. I hand cut the groove for the cap iron screw, but after I cut down the plane to finished size I’m wondering if I needed it at all. I used Maple for the body and base and Cherry for the sides. I followed the assembly instruction and and ed up with a 3/8” opening in the mouth. I don’t seem to be able to get very fine shaving with that large a mouth and it plugs up quite a bit with the big shavings. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.
I’m going to post this on the forum and see if I can get some pointers and advise.

it looks like the wedge is pretty thick, which means it doesn’t leave enough room for the shavings to escape. I’d open up the front more.

I’d like to see a picture of the wedge as well. What does the bottom look like.
