If you’ve ever tried meditation, or you are inclined towards long periods of prayer, this might be a project for you to look into.
It’s a prayer bench, or a meditation bench for my purposes, built out of highly figured Okoume wood, from Africa. The wood cost a pretty penny, but I’ve never seen it before, and I think it was worth every dime.
The construction is very simple. I used hinges on the legs so that the bench can be folded up and fit into a backpack for hiking purposes. Okoume is also a very lightweight wood, so that’s a plus for this project. The legs are cut at a slight angle to help with the alignment of the spine during meditation. I’ve sat on this baby for over an hour without even a hint of physical discomfort.
The top is 21 inches long, the legs are 7 inches long on the long end. They are cut at about a 5-10 degree angle, I’m not sure, I just eye-balled it. It is finished with several coats of spray-on poly (gloss).
The figuring in this wood is still unreal to me. Pictures don’t do it justice; the way it shifts and changes is indescribable.
Thanks for looking, I’m excited to hear your responses!
