While waiting for my son to finish a doctor’s appointment I decided to drive down the street to a flea market. I almost bought a ninja throwing star, and barely passed on a couple of other useless items before I saw a small pile of molding and trim. The longest piece was a board (maple) and upon examination I found it to be a piece of base molding, with a large rounded bead on the bottom. The pattern in the wood was cool… I really like spalted woods (is this one?) and since it was over 6” wide, bought it.
I used the table saw and cut off the routed edge (almost left it on for a unique look.) Then I made a nice big box. 12” x 6” x 5 1/2. I also made a tray for it, and am really satisfied with it. I am able to craft boxes like this pretty well in my workshop (if you want to see where I make these, go to this page:)
As I said, I think this is maple. If I’m wrong, please let me know. The top and splines are walnut. Lots of sanding, Minwax Tung oil, and two coats of wipe on poly. Thanks for looking, I appreciate it!
