When the wife and I decided to take up wood working, I convinced her the very first thing we needed to do was build a work table of some kind. She really REALLY wanted to do something else first. But we persisted.

It’s a simple build. 1×4’s for the frame, a few sheets of MDF and hardboard for the top. Its stable, but lacks the weight to resist hand planing well. If I was redoing it, I’d go for 2×4s for the frame at least. I’ve since added a vice and filled in the bottom shelf, but this was a picture right after it was ‘finished’.

I really like it. It is going to be something that you can keep adding things to since the lines are so clean. Really functional.
I think that it’s a lot easier to build a bench, if you already have a bench. When you do make one to do more hand planning on, you’ll have a leg up. Then this bench will transition to holding some other power tool and live on. Something that you can use now is always better than something that might be better but is months (or never) in the future. (The chairs and table look great as well.)

Welcome. You would be a great woodworker couple soon. I also believe that, any one serious about getting into this for a long innings, should build a workbench first. Yours is simple but functional, that is what matters.

All the very best to both of you. keep sharing your future projects on this great Forum

It’s a nice addition to your shop. Congratulations.

Very nice for a first bench. Pretty cool that you guys are into woodworking together. Great to have a hobby to share.

You and your wife have a good start, that will be a very useful bench around the shop. I’m sure you’ll make great projects that both of you will enjoy.

Have your say...
