Here’s the matching nightstand to my black walnut bed!
I never use other people’s plans—I always start fresh with my own ideas, since that’s where innovation comes from. I’ve never seen a nightstand with drawers visible from the outside, so decided that was my plan. Originally, I’d wanted to tackle a dresser with this in mind, but this nightstand gave me a good proof of concept.
The legs are held together with the runners for the drawers. I decided not to cut the runners off, and let them extend right through the face of the drawers. I even staggered them, so that the top left and bottom right runners stick out an inch less than the top right and bottom left runners. It’s mine, that’s for sure!
I decided to accent the walnut with some cherry scraps, just because I can. You don’t know what you like until you try it. I’m not in love with the top, but I’m totally digging the stripe on the drawers.
I finally had the courage to try handcut dovetails. I made my own magnetic jig (described here), and used a japanese saw. They came out a little bit gappy, but I blame my jig—I trusted my miter saw’s angle gauge to be truly symmetrical, and that was a mistake. I’ll take the time to make one right before my next dovetailing project.
I’d love to get thinking about my dresser soon, but I’m clueless how to keep that lightweight. Walnut exposed everywhere would have a toll on whoever helps me move next…
Thanks for checking it out!
