My first project! Well, maybe not my first … I helped my Dad on his projects when I was a kid. So this is my first project in probably 30 years. Nothing fancy, just a functional work surface. I used the plan from Popular Mechanics. I decided not to add the drawer for now, but want to add some casters and bring the height up to table saw height. The photo was taken before I added a sheet of MDF on top. This has made it much easier for clamping.

Very sturdy and looks like a great size to have .

Perfect! Sturdy and straight, function that dictates the form is the foundation for any high quality tool. This bench will be your most used tool and will evolve to meet all your needs. Tool holders, stops, jigs, braces, notes and sketches will be added and removed to met any need, while paint, scars, scrapes, dings, and general wear will keep a record of past projects and skill development. Great 1st. project. Seems to say lets get down to business and do some work—your mind set is ready and your attitude is perfect for learning, designing, as well as sharing and teaching acquired knowledge. Expensive and fancy benches are nice, but your design I prefer. Benches tell alot about a craftsman. A cool 2nd project might be a carpenters/machinist chest, they also can speak volumes about its maker/owner. Keep up the fine work!

Very functional. Now you need to get it a little dirty. Throw some dirt on it or something.

Exactly, gusthehonky! I went to a local Woodsmith shop and drooled over the fancy workbenches. I would be afraid to even put one of those in my garage/workshop. The bench I made is asking to be used and not looked at.
I have a whole bunch of ideas for a next project. However, instead of making something else for the shop I’m going to make a proper dog house for my 2 dogs and throw away the too small plastic thing I bought at a pet store. I figure if I make a few mistakes, the dogs won’t mind :).
Thanks!

See? I knew you were allright. Great idea for #2 and a great place to practice fun stuff like mortice & tennons, dado, rabbets, and locking grooves. Just have fun, explore, learn and be safe. Being a carpenter/roofer by trade there is no room on jobsites for the fancy stuff, trim and moulding along with the rare mantel or decorative overhang support tests the limits of woodwork vs. carpentry. Still I enjoy the quest to attain the title of a master craftsman. This site amazes me, the projects and the attitude of those involved who share, teach and offer advice is quite the inspiration. Listen and learn from everyone, including yourself, if something feels funny or not quite right, step back and rethink every aspect, be open minded, know your limits, but test them, be safe, and have fun!
