A nice little intarsia piece I did last year on commission from a photo provided my Millies owner. All the colors are natural wood with three coats of danish oil to bring out the grains and protect the wood. This one is about 9 inches.
Woods used: Pine, poplar, fir, ebony, mahogany, rosewood, walnut, and aspen.
I’ve never worked from a purchased pattern, instead I make all my patterns myself and try not to make copies unless it is part of the commission. I prefer them to be one of a kind. I also do much more shaping and ad in extra glue steps in order to shape two woods together (see the eyes and upper jaw for examples).

Hi Dogwood,
A great job for sure. I had to get my glasses out to determine out which one was the dog!
Very fine workmanship.

Wonderful piece. Intarsia is on my “gotta try” list. I see work like this and move it farther down the list because a little voice say “I can’t do that.” Thanks for the post.

This is very nice!
I wish I could do something like that without a pattern.
Thanks for sharing!!!

Allison, you would be surprised at how easy it is to make a pattern. I had never heard of intarsia when I started making them. It took about 2 months before my wife showed me a woodworker magazine featuring intarsia. I was just playing around with a scroll saw. So I didn’t know you could buy patterns until I had made about 15 of my own.
