Very nice looking table. The wood grain in that maple is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing.

Great looking stand Rich! Curly maple can be a little hard to work, but the end result is more than worth it. Thanks for posting it…you did an incredible job.

Great table. I think that curly maple adds a little extra to anything that is made from it.

How many people have curly maple like that, just laying in the shop? And how much hand planning/scraping did it take to get that beautiful grain to pop out like that? Nice job!

I bought it to do our bedroom set, and the orders came in so money making projects come before Making-The-Wife-Happy projects. I went back to my supplier Sunday to get the curly maple to replace what I used for this table, the pile is still pretty big. Not to worry, I put the MTWH project in the schedule so I am delaying the paying projects until the bedroom set is done.
What is this hand planing and scraping you speak of? I do sand it out to a 500 grit Abralon pad. I always use Deft Natural Oil for the finish, that really accentuates the figuring.

Rich – great table. I really like the curly maple. What process do you use for applying the Deft Natural Oil? Your finish looks wonderful.

I do a very wet coat, keep applying to keep it wet looking for about 10-15 minutes. Then I wipe it dry. Then let it sit for about 7 days, until all the tackiness is gone. Then I do a quick abralon 1000 grit sand. Follow that with a quick wipe on/wipe off coat, which I wet about a 1 sw ft area and then immediately wipe it dry. Another 24 hours drying time and it is good to go.

I have some maple like that in my shop waiting for the right project. I afraid I may mess it up. If I had your skills I’d be a bit more confident to use it : ) .
