I tried the sand filled box with a drill press, as much to keep it from moving, as to damp vibrations. But no matter how carefully I added sand, it never pushed up against the plywood. You can not quite fill the box. And it made noise- a regular drum, set up a resonance whenever I ran it. That top hunk of plywood made more vibration, not less! Gave up on the whole idea, just bolted the sucker to the floor.
