... or “Este não está um cinzeiro verde” (this is not a green ashtray) – with apologies to Magritte – this is such a very very long way from the first drawing.

I thought this might be a fun thing to make – I need to seriously think, in the future, about those things that amuse me before I spend all this time and energy. Still, it’s done now, and I learned some things, so in that sense it was a success.

I’m lucky to be able to get beech, and quartersawn beech is out of the question, so I had to make my own from strips. Making that smooth and flat was a significant challenge, but I think it came out OK – I wanted “plain and grain free” and this was the best way I could think of to get that look.

Not much more to say really – the wife said ”I really like that”, so her mind must be about as twisted as mine.

Fumed oak, ash, beech.
Linseed oil.
500mm x 320mm x 250mm high.

I like it. Is there a function to follow the form? Or is it a stand alone?
