I went to bed last night with every intention of staying out of the shop and going fishing today: I haven’t gone in about 2 weeks. When I woke up this morning, I wasn’t feeling that great and with heat predictions of high 90’s, I decided to keep the boat under the tarp and I stayed in the shop all day. I wound up working on 4 different projects – what a day!
I saved another piece of wood from the fireplace and decided to turn another bowl. I just can’t seem to bring myself to burning cherry. This one measures 3¼” by 5” and is finished with a couple coats of poly. While gouging out the inside of the bowl I was a little concerned that is was not going to turn out very good because there was an in-grown peice of a stick that broke out as I was turning. Remnants of the stick can be seen inside the bowl, but not the outside.

Your stick adds alot of character. The cherry has beautiful grain patterns. Thank you for sharing.

Nice looking turning, there is never a bad turning, only a bad uh, uh, a bad piece of wood. Yea thats it.

I can’t bring myself to burn cherry either. I have a small stack of it in the basement to prove it. Oak I can burn – after I look at the grain first ;)
I like the character the bit of stick adds, was thinking about ways of incorporating sticks into bowls as a sculptural or design element (Lots of time in the car – looking at trees, not enough turning) – gotta actually turn a bowl first I suppose.
