Project Information
This is my 1:8 scale model of a John Deere tractor tire.
This is a link to a YouTube video that tells the story of why I made the bandsaw box.
This is my 1:8 scale model of a John Deere 13.6 - 38 tractor tire. My bandsaw box has a diameter of 7.88 inches. The original tire is 65 inches in diameter and made of rubber.
It is made from Douglas fir. I began the project with a 10×2 Douglas fir board. I glued three sections of the board into a blank. Then I cut the blank to shape with the bandsaw and removed the center and made the cuts in typical bandsaw fashion. The original tractor has chevron treads. My bandsaw box also has the same chevron treads. I used a router at a 15-degree angle, with a 1/4-inch router bit, and stop block to form the treads. There were bits of tear out on the treads with the router, but I like them. They look like the marks left by real-life wear and tear on a tractor tire.
I chose to paint the lid of the box to mimic the wheel of a tractor. I used a Dremel tool to add a few scuffs and dings. Again, this bandsaw box is to imitate the wheels on our family tractors. Our tractors have seen years and years of use.
Now for a twist-If you twist the hub of the bandsaw box lid, rare earth magnets will come apart and you can remove the lid.
My family has used predominantly John Deere tractors for generations, so I think it only appropriate to use John Deere colors of yellow and green for the M&Ms.
