Walnut Bed (Harvey Ellis) No-picture-s No-picture-s Click the pictures to enlarge them

Before I built this our mattress and box spring was on the floor (it had a kind of college feel). I finished this in february (‘07). I feel a little silly posting older projects, but I never got to post it here when I built it (didn’t know you guys existed!) so, what the heck.

I finished it with a couple of coats of minwax’s “Tung Oil Finish”. The bed was inspired by a Stickley bed I saw here in High Point NC. I measured everything (the slats, spacings, etc.) when the sales lady walked away! I had to convert some measurements to accomodate a King mattress (And add a few more slats).

Another view showing off the grain in the footboard slats:

Above you can see the indentions in the carpet from where the boxspring use to rest :^)

The bed breaks down using hardware I bought at Woodcraft. You have to mortise it into the legs:

Prefinish:

I installed a ledger on the rails to support the poplar slats that hold the boxspring (shown in CAD rendering). I also have a support in the center on the bed that supports the boxspring from the middle.

CAD:

Measurements can be found on my website if you want to build one!

Thanks for looking!! :^)

Man,

I am a huge fan of walnut and that grain on that walnut is beautiful. Tung oil is my favorite finish for walnut because it just makes it come alive. Your work is equally as beautiful.

Sure beats the “college feel”. Walnut is my favorite wood – your project is a beautiful use of the wood.

Looks good. I love Arts & Crafts pieces, and I like them even more when built with walnut, cherry, maple, etc…

Your bed looks great. You got skills…

Brian, nice bed! My wife is talking about refinishing our current bed, but I like this one: I may have to make one for her instead.

Brian,
That is a beautiful piece. You said you used Minwax Tung Oil Finish and that this is an older project? Have you had any problems with the finish? I used it on my night stand that I built in January of this year, made of walnut and cherry. After being in use for awhile now, I am not really happy with it. Some of the sheen seems to have worn and a couple of light/discolored spots have appeared. It was the first time I used it. I am thinking that maybe since it was during the winter I didn’t have the temp up high enough in my shop and it didn’t cure right. Or maybe I should have put on a couple of more coats. I love the feel of it though, it is almost silky to the touch. Would you or have you used this finish on any other projects?

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

Thanks for the compliment! I haven’t had any problems with the finish, but I do think it could use another coat. The finish may have gotten a little dull over time, but this might be common with oil finishes.?.
I have used this on a few other pieces as well. No complaints.

Darryl,
The walnut choice for the bed was actually my wife’s idea, so I can’t take credit for that :)
Thank you for the compliment!

Tung oil is a great finish but needs to be reapplied periodically. To prevent this I have actually used tung oil to pop the grain of the wood usually at least two coats. Then wait a few days for it to dry and then proceed with either a coat of wipe on poly or lacquer. I now have used this technique on several projects that I have posted here on LJ and I really like the results. I believe I read this technique in Jeff Jewitt’s Great Wood Finishes. Just a thought.

Brian,

Nice tip! I recently purchased Jeff Jewitt’s Complete Illustrated Guide to Finishing , but I haven’t had a chance to read much of it yet.

Thanks!
