A coworker of mine had asked me to make some stuff from a tree that had fallen in his late father’s yard. The tree fell last winter and by the time I had gotten to it it had been chunked up into some pretty large pieces that were already starting to split. I collected a few manageable pieces to see what I could come up with. I still have pieces drying in my garage but he wanted to have something this month to give to a sibling that was visiting.
I cut some pieces off of larger logs with my chainsaw, then used the bandsaw to shape the box and drilled it out on the drill press with Fostner Bits. I left this box very much intact in the hope of minimizing any additional splitting. It is finished with lacquer, the hinges are something I picked up at an old hardware store a few years ago. They were at the back of the hook and must be at least 20 years old as the package was quite faded and also had no barcodes on it. The inside holes are also flocked with Black Flocking.

Thanks for looking.

Great idea! Like the design, very organic. The hinges look great with it. Well done!

Neat box, and I’m sure ANY of his siblings would love to have that keepsake of their Dad.

You can’t get more natural than that. Nice work. You have given me ideas with this. Thanks
