This table is cypress and for outdoor use. The legs were pickets from the porch of my great grandfather’s house in Mobile, Alabama. The house, built in 1852, was called Summerdale, hence the name of the table. The house is no more… I turned the bottoms round and removed the old ‘milk paint’, which was the hardest and most time consuming part of the whole project. Finished the whole thing with Watco Exterior Oil. Spar varnish over that on the top only.

Wood with a history makes projects so much more special! Great job on this table.

Did the Watco Exterior Oil darken the cypress appreciably. My recently posted cypress chair finished with Spar is very white.

Thanks to you both. gfadvm, the Watco didn’t seem to darken the cypress at all. It did make the grain stand out more, which is what I like about Watco. The cypress was just as yellow before finishing. Color does not seem to have changed much in the two or three years since I made it.

Our Oklahoma bald cypress must just be whiter than others.
