TROPICAL AFRICAN “IROKO” SCROLL SAWN NAME PLAQUES..
INFO :- IROKO IS A LARGE HARDWOOD TREE FROM THE WEST COAST OF TROPICAL AFRICA AND IS REFERRED TO AS AFRICAN TEAK , ALTHOUGH IT IS UNRELATED TO THE TEAK FAMILY.
THE WOOD IS INITIALLY YELLOW BUT DARKENS TO A RICHER BROWN OVER TIME .
THE TREE IS FEARED IN SOME CULTURES ! THE YORUBA PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT THE TREE IS INHABITED BY A SPIRIT.
GREAT TIMBER FOR BOAT BUILDING FLOORING & FURNITURE VERY DURABLE AND REQUIRES VERY LITTLE TREATMENTS OF OIL OR VARNISH. NOTE POSSIBLE ADVERSE EFFECTS KNOWN TO BE CAUSED BY IROKO DUST INCLUDING ASTHMA DERMATITIS AND NETTLE RASH.
CHECK OUT THE SIX PHOTOS TO SEE THE RICH COLORS SHADE & GRAIN.
MY LOCAL TIMBER IMPORTER HAS A GOOD SUPPLY OF IROKO , I FIND IT A GREAT ADDITION IN MY WORKSHOP. ALSO NOW HAVE A GREAT DEAL OF EBONY BUT MORE ON THAT OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS. HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS POST FROM BAZZ WINDSOR WEST LONDON ENGLAND.

Sweet! Awesome! That is a very exquisite scroll saw work! The wood looks great. Truly brilliant.

Great work! And excellent explanation on the Iroko. It is light wood? Here there is something that produces similar effects and is called “Timbo”. Very lightweight, fully waterproof, including fleet, but termination is difficult because the dust is annoying.

Your choice of wood is gorgeous as well as your finish. Great scroll saw projects you make. Like the mom and dad fonts.

Have your say...
