PurpleHeart Bass (aka The Shoulder Killer) No-picture-s No-picture-s Click the pictures to enlarge them

This was one of the first instruments I made. It’s a solid piece of Purple Heart with a Warmoth neck. I rough cut the body with a tabletop bandsaw, and did the shaping with rasps and a palm sander. Originally I was going to shape the upper cutaway differently, but as I was working on it, it sort of took on a life of its own.

There are some imperfections that I’ll get around to correcting, once I get some of my higher priority projects finished.

The pickups are EMG select, and a Classic 65’ Fender custom shop jazz pickup in the bridge. I used gold hardware, and cut a veneer piece for the headstock.

It has a lot of punch, and a ton of sustain, but it’s REALLY heavy. About 12 pounds.

If the audience turns on you, you can use it for self defense. Cool!

Cool.

How did you learn to build these?

Mostly, trial and error. I used to have really cheap guitars, so I would try to customize them myself. After a while I got good at fixing them up. Rewiring, replacing necks, etc.

Nice! I’m a bass player too…that thing must have ridiculous sustain with a purpleheart body!

Will your next one be cast cement or maybe granite? You know to cut down on the weight.

So you’re the one damnhippie told me about! He’s got some alder drying for you doesn’t he…

Did you make the neck and fingerboard too? What’s the string length on that?

Another bass player here.

Yep, I am he. I’m looking forward to the Alder getting dried out enough to work on.

I didn’t make the neck. I don’t feel competent enough to do necks/fingerboards/ frets yet. I plan to learn it eventually. I bought the neck from Warmoth.com.

It’s a 34” inch scale, the same as a Jazz bass.

In all honesty, I’m a lousy bass player. I’m a guitarist, I just made it to have something to record with. I’m playing through a Hartke 15” combo sitting on a black widow 15” extension cab.

That is one eye catching, head turning instrument. No one’s going to attack you on stage if you’re carrying that baby. I feel quite nervous just looking at it. Have you tried it to use it at a gig, or is it strictly for the studio where the sustain must make it cool? I don’t play, but I wouldn’t fancy carrying 12lb round my kneck for two hours. Congrats on this very impressive piece.
