This was an anniversary gift for my wife. It’s curly maple and walnut. It turned out pretty well for my first attempt at something like this. I’m not too pleased with the finish (shellac then wax), but that can always be removed and redone.

nice box, like the mitered keys. As for the finish, you might try adding more layers of shellac and using a 1/2 lb cut for the final coat (im assuming you used shellac in a can) just add some denatured alcohol and your set.

Nice box of beautiful wood. The shellac really popped the grain on that maple. What don’t you like about the finish? It looks good from here!

Love the look of that curly maple and the shape of the box. Did you design it? What are the dimensions?

You can apply anything over shellac. Why not several coats of polyurethane? Gloss or sei-gloss, depending on your preference. I’m with sonnyr, did you design this? I like it alot.

What a great anniversary gift! That box looks really pretty, great design and the woods are gorgeous. Great job!
