My wife’s grandmother passed away this spring and this very old cedar picnic table is now in our care. The wood on the table is still in excellent shape, just looks a little rough. I took out every single screw and dismantled every single board. LOTS of sanding with the orbital sander, belt sander and sanding block. I briefly used the planer on the boards for the table top. I only used 80grit sandpaper it cut down past the old wood quick. Many of the screws were stripped and i considered replacing them all with new ones, but after reassembling the first bench i realized they held the character of the tables history and really liked the look.
We already have another patio table and chair set on the deck so we’ll keep this safely stored in the rafters of my shed and only use it for special occasions.
It was a great to see my wife’s smile when I got everything put back together. She has a lot of memories from her youth with her grandparents at their house and I know she’s excited to have this table to remember them by.
Humorous side note: We found out over the holiday weekend that one of her older brothers borrowed just the table a few years back for a bachelor party for a ‘hired performer’... Lets just say to be safe I switched to some 60 grit sandpaper to make sure all of the the sins were removed from the table.
