The West Virginia House of Delegates elected a new Speaker of the House on June 18th. (http://www.legis.state.wv.us/House/speaker.cfm). I was asked to turn a new gavel for him. They spec’d ‘solid walnut’ no other woods like I have used in some gavels in the past. It is a large gavel, the handle is 12” and the head is over 3” in diameter. I drilled into the handle at the head end about 3” and epoxied a 5/16” carbon-fiber rod to reinforce the head as these get banged down pretty hard sometimes and handles have broken at the heads. The handle is epoxied into head about 1.5”. Several coats of hand rubbed lacquer for the finish. I burned rings into handle and head with stainless wire for just a little extra character. Walnut was harvested here in West Virginia. They have a pounding/sounding block built into the Speaker’s podium but I will make a base for it in the near future. Thanks for looking.
