Dinner Bell Handle

This summer I decided to install a dinner bell that my parents had when I was a kid. This was actually used to let us kids know when dinner was ready. To add a unique feature to the bell I carved a handle out of a stick that I found in the woods of Mt Baker mountain in the Seattle area while visiting my son. Not sure what type of wood it is, but it carved very nice. The size is about 1 3/8” dia. x 8” long. I painted using acrylic paint, than sealed with a clear coat. Over top of that I painted acrylic “burnt umber” paint and wiped off. To do the final coat I used two coats of “gloss” polyurethane. With a little sanding between coats, I have something that should hold up to the weather.

He doesn’t look too happy about having his beard pulled! LOL Great expression. Thanks for sharing.

I’d say that bell has weathered very well over the years.

Oh yea. Just give that beard a tug… I’ve always liked these dinner bells.

Thanks for the comments. When I was carving I kept thinking of the character that played on the Christmas movie “Polar Express” when the train engineer had to move the caribou off the train track.

I’ve got one of these bells. Bought it about 35 years ago. It’s been boxed up for over 16 years (didn’t put it out at the last 2 houses we lived in). Just told the wife last week that I’m gonna uncrate that thing, clean and paint it and put it up here.
I like the pull you made!
