Ok so I finally got to try out Andys technique (art box) Not quite the work of art I had hoped but hey its made to hold the soft paper that wipes up after you LOL.
The top pieces and legs are lace wood and hand carved with a dremal and hours of sanding. The box is cherry and ground out with a grinding stone on my angle grinder. (I just got one of those cool ones with the chainsaw blade on it, can’t wait to try it on next project). Anyway the sanding on this part wasn’t anywhere as close to the time it took on the legs.
Things I learned, something this tall really needs four legs, its a bit top heavy. Also I flowed my grinding around the corners of the box but I never thought about clamping down the lid and making that flow too. There is always next time.
I usually do a modified french polish finish where I use a 1lb cut shelac for a couple a coats then a couple coats of wipe-on poly. I’ve found it to be fool proof for me at least. Well I didn’t have any wipe-on poly at the time so I just tried to wipe on very light full strength poly, Yeah…..... that didn’t work so well. So I got to do some more sanding and had to get some wipe-on poly anyway… jeez you would think I would learn by now..
Thanks for looking and let me know what you think.
