After putting off the inevitable, I finally built new garage doors to replace the rotting old doors that were barely passing as doors. The new ones were made out of 2×4 half lapped framing, cover by a 3/4” plywood and then 1x trim boards. The half laps were mostly hand cut and an exercise in patience. I didn’t realized I had built tank proof doors that weighed more than a small car. This gaffe caused me to rip off the bump out on the front of the garage and sink new 4×4s and sister them to the existing opening framing to support the new doors. The off shoot of removing the bump out was that now the old back gate was no longer big enough. Soooooo, I had to build a new back gate as well (tank proof to match the garage doors!). I actually had a great time building both projects, it’s funny how woodworking never seems like work, just a whole lot of fun :o)

I have run into this problem often, people want gates that match the deck rails and that gets heavy. The only solution I came up with is over build to avoid gravity.

Hi Pat;
Great looking work!
I imagine they are rather heavy. Must have been a bear too hang them.
