Project Information

Pictured: Men's valet box, this box is made from Walnut and Pecan, I wasn't sure how the combination would turn out when I matched these two woods together, doesn't seem as though I got the contrast I was really wanting as it seems they blend in to much, I'll chalk it up as a learning experience. This box has my hidden drawer along with my hidden compartment only instead of an open tray on top I optioned from a shaker panel lid, this is my first shaker lid and the center piece is also pecan with the outer being walnut, the splines drawer pulls and hinges are also pecan, I once again used Grizz, Patron and Andy side mounted hinges with brass pins.

It measures 13" x 7" x 9", finished in a single coat of tung oil, a few coats of wipe on poly and a final coat of paste wax.

That is absolutely wonderful! How do you Poen the left hand drawer without the hidden drawer coming out, oor ouce that drawer is partially open then open the hidden drawer? Are magnets involved? I think the Pecan would have stayed more blonde had you not used the tung oil or BLO, just clear poly. My Pecan seems to be more blonde.

i like the combo myself, its a mild contrast and has a very warm feel to it, ive got some pecan with more spalting and lighter color then what you have here, you will see it soon in an up and coming project…but this is a good box..i do think the drawers do look better with with a smaller gap around the drawer front, but this is a keeper for sure.

There's something about this wood that I'm still on the fence about, what I'm calling Pecan may very well be walnut, just a lighter shade and after reading comments about pecan being lighter makes me wonder even more that perhaps I have this wood tagged wrong, The body of the box is for sure walnut as it was purchased but the accent wood that I'm calling pecan, I cut with my chainsaw it was a tree that had been laying on the ground for 2 years and the folks stated it was walnut, after taking a sample to the local lumber yard I was told it was pecan but I'm not so sure now, it could quite possibly be walnut.

Thanks for the comments Monte, Russell and Grizz.

Russell By pulling the drawer completely out and then turning it around allows you access to the hidden drawer, the hidden drawer stays in until you either tilt the main drawer or physically pull it out, as for as magnets being involved they are for the false bottom door, I've never felt a need to use magnets for the hidden drawer as it normally stays put.

I like it, the woods are warm and the box is very interesting.
If I ever saw a box that you made and it wasn't on display like this I would be compelled to open it up and see the rest of it. I think it's like a mystery when you only see two drawers when there could of been more, It makes you wonder and ask what that all about. It draws you to it, no pun intended!
Nice work Randy!

Irrespective of the species , they appear from here to go well together. Maybe you can make a second sister that has a higher contrasting handle for comparison?

Pretty soon I'm thinking your going to get a holy Galahad , and add some Greg the Cajun box sculpture to your collection of expansions?

Looks like you are in the zone!

I like it! Contrast may be subtle but it is there. Our pecan ALL has lots of worm holes in it.

Just curious as to why the chain? Those hinges should stop the lid just past 90 degrees?

Andy I might still be struggling with the hole placement or something? The lid goes past the the 90 degree mark quite a bit so that's why I added the chain. The first box I made I had a tighter fit on the hinges on this one I placed a sheet of wax paper between the hinge and the wall of the box so has to give it that slight clearance.
