This project was a ton of fun. To start the project I got to go to a junkyard and just walk around for a couple hours looking at all kinds of cool stuff until I found just the tailgates I was looking for. There are however still a few more sill there so I will be back for them now that I know how to do this project, and want for of my own.
This was my most difficult project so far to date considering that I only gave myself 3 1/2 days to get two benches done. I first found this project posted over on HomeRefurbers and decided I wanted to give it a try. Which brings me to Skidog…. I have to give a big thank you to one of our members- Skidog. He was the original poster of this project and he sent me a ton of photo of his latest bench project in different phases of completion. This made the process much easier for me.
I found that scribing the back post to be the most difficult process for me since I do not have access to a band saw. Instead I tried a couple of differnt tools, and only the jig saw worked when cutting from both sides. Also trying to keep all the metal shavings swept up so little feet did not end up walking all over them was a concern. Multipule trips to lowes were also involved in this project since I found myself needing different supplies than what I had on hand. It took me about 10 hours to complete each bench, including supply runs and monitoring two youngsters. I was very pleased with the final product, as were my father and hers. It has given me the confidence to continue to try diffent projects. The only down fall, is now that my wife sees that I am capable of things like this she is now talking about more projects that she wants me to do!!!!
