My last turned project- an oak gavel with ammonia ‘stain’ and satin lacquer finish. My mentor recently passed away and I joined this site hoping to reconnect with some of the skills he taught me in his shop. I bought a new lathe and perhaps this summer I’ll be able to plug it in and make some shavings in his honor. All tips on setting up shop, sharpening gouges, creating useful homemade jigs extremely welcome!

Hi Dregan. First of all…....... Welcome To Lumberjocks! You’ll find this the greatest woodworking website on the net. Great helpful and encouraging people. As any question in a a blog and you’ll soon have 20 mentors!!

Nice gavel. Sorry to hear about losing your mentor. I know how valuable a resource like that can be. I lost two good friends I used to go to for questions and guidance and you surely miss them.
