I have an 18 year old son who has never really expressed an interest in woodworking until last week. He asked if we could make a shelf for his video games (hey anything to keep the house clean and spend a little time in the shop sounds like a good idea to me). He had an idea and that was we could make shelves that looked like they were floating by screwing L-brackets into game boxes. That sounded like the start of a good idea, but you can also see the problem, there is no wood involved in that idea. So I proposed that we gut the video game boxes, put a planed down piece of hardwood in the center (letting some foaming gorilla glue do its magic inside the case to hold everything together) and cut holes in the back sides of the game boxes to receive the bracket so they wouldn’t show underneath. This idea is better because it looks even more like it is floating and there is wood involved.
I think they look pretty good. Really they are far more stable than they need to be. We probably could have gotten by with one L bracket right in the center. The best part is he had fun doing it and might have a little more interest in wood working now. That too would be a bonus.
