CD-case

This is a Christmas-present for my mom and dad.

The girl on the first picture is my girlfriend.

The whole case is made of one board (made of 2” wide, 3/4” thick, 6’ long slats) of larch which I bought ready from the lumberyard because I don’t have a jointer. (I’d really like to have one.)
Larch is longlasting without a finish but a properly chosen finish makes the wood look fabulous. What kind of finishing do you suggest for this type of furniture?

Nice looking CD rack. I like to use wipe-on poly. It gives the wood a rich, warm glow and relatively easy to apply. Now I know what inspired your carving! Thank you for sharing.

I’ve kind of taken to oil-varnish blends lately. They are really easy to apply and they have a great look. I mix my own and this is how I do it. 1 part tung oil, 1 part poly (satin or gloss) and 1 part mineral spirits. I like to wipe down with a tack cloth before applying. Then just wipe on even coats with a clean cotton cloth like an old t-shirt. This is just one mans opinion. Good luck and update the pictures after the finish..

Ok, no fair trying to take our attention away from the woodworking project. That CD case could be a pile of ashes and still look good.

Ok, seriously, that is one nice looking CD case. I cast a vote for a coat or two of brushed on water based polyurethane. The water based poly will dry clear and not change the color of the wood. Any oil-based finish will make the wood look a little more yellow. In my opinion, the color is perfect just as it is.

Keep up the great work, and now that the project is done, spend some time with your lady!

WOW…..THAT’S THE PRETTIEST PROJECT I’VE SEEN ON THIS SITE SO FAR !!! I’M SURE YOU WON THE BLUE RIBBON FOR THAT ONE : ) Very nice cd rack as well…I use to work in a lumber yard and saw many a piece of larch that I wanted to take home with me…I second the motion for keeping that color all natural with waterbased Poly…...oils will darken it and turn yellowish …keep it bright and beautiful please : )

Beautiful display and project. Excellent choice of modeling to show height and detail.

Very nice. I would suggest a wipe on poly as well.
