An older gentleman has a staircase going to his basement and it has no door. He has a difficult time walking and almost fell down his stairs a couple of times. He was interested in some sort of safety gate that would withstand his weight if he fell against it. He also wanted something that looked like it was meant to be in that spot. This is what I came up with. I laminated two 1” thick oak planks together to make the frame and stops. I used a mortise and tenon joint at the corners. The spindles are actually stair ballisters cut to length. I used 3 three inch door hinges to mount it to the wall stop.
