Stairs in process

Removing the professionally installed stairs and railings. Top half of stairs has had a 9”rise and 10” step, lower had a variable 10 or 11 inch rise with the same 10” step. These were dangerous for the homeowner and guests. I widened the platform at the tob, raised the platform in the center and extended the lower stairs for a uniform 7” rise and 11” inch step.

Clamps were too short, so we used the tie down straps during glue up and asssembly.

Installed rails…not a bad look for some shipping crates and couple of used 2”x4”s

impressive. It must have been a pretty irresponsible contractor to mess up the stairs like that.

I can see that the stairs turned out great, I cant see it all in the second pic, but it looks like that is one heck of a view. Great progress

Matter,
The build is deep enough in the country that the only thing requiring a permit / inspection was the septic system.

Everything else is a free for all.

This is the owners retirement home where he always wanted to build his own cabin. He did most of the shell, and interior walls himself. The walls behind the stairs are 2” off plumb at 10 ”, and 3/4” off level the width of the stairs.

The other contractor was so obsessed with the wall off plumb, off square and the floor off level that he slapped enough together to get a partial check then left. Just as well, he was driving me nuts with all his whining…

I tackled the task with the attitude that I was helping build his dream… everything was solid, if not perfect, so I treated it as if I was starting from the rough foundation. I didn’t want to undo anything the owner had started. I incorporated most all of the owners design suggestions, along with a few additions along the same theme.

Now he can show people his dreams…all I did was help deliver.
