A box I made for my friend Schmitty. He just had a son in early April, so I made this for him to keep until his son’s 21st Birthday. the box will hold two fifths (Jack Daniels and Jim Beam) and also has a small compartment that I plan on putting a letter to his son. On the inside of the lid there is an engraving of a cowboy riding off into the sunset and lyrics from one of my favorite songs. If you never heard “The Ride” by Chris LeDoux, I suggest you look it up on YouTube… awesome song. I don’t know if you’ll be able to read what the words are so here goes:

”Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high,
Keep your eyes fixed, where the trail meets the sky.
Live like you ain’t afraid to die,
And don’t be scared, just enjoy your ride.”

I was going to wait until Monday to give this to Schmitty as Monday is his birthday. However, his dad just lost his battle with cancer yesterday, and Monday will also be the memorial service and wake. I don’t know if now would be a good time to give this to him or not, but I think I’m gonna take it over tonight.

As far as the box itself, its made from oak with walnut accents on the lid and feet. I finished it with two coats of tung oil, although I have mixed feelings about how it came out.

Very handsome looking box. As Dave said the two contrasting woods look great together.

Thanks for all of the comments- tomd as for the engraving, we have a laser engraver at work that I am able to do text and pictures. It works with design software similar to MS word and hooks up to the computer just like printer.
