My wife asked me to make a planter box for our front porch. I showed her the Ice Chest/Cooler box and said imagine this wider and shallower. She like the basic idea but wanted it lower to the ground. I redesigned the box to fit her wishes and came up with the planter below. I used 6 – 1×6 x 72 cedar fence pickets to make this planter.

You can view a video of this build on my YouTube page at:

You can see the whole build on my blog at:

I also made a sketchup file of this planter box and it can be downloaded here:

Looks like a great conversion from the original ‘ice box’ plans. Well done!

Well done Donald, a great looking planter box. You must have earned some serious brownie points for making that for your wife….:)

Love it! I too have done a lot of projects with cedar fence pickets. They always come out nice. The best finish I’ve found so far is WATER based outdoor spar Varathane. Good job on the planter and the cooler.

Great project and the timing couldn’t be better. I have a bunch of fence pickets that I didn’t know what to do with. Now I know!

Perfect timing as my wife wants one too and I have some cedar lying around. Perfect! Looks quick and easy!

Beautiful and solid planter box! I’m sure they will last long and get plenty of use. Great work!
